Being in Albuquerque, we all have our own family traditions. There are some that we share, like making Bizcochitos with the family and the BEST one is the tradition of the Luminarias Festival. For those of you who DON’T know, a luminaria is a brown paper bag with a votive candle for light and sand weighing it down. Every Christmas Eve, thousands of them line the streets of Albuquerque with their beautiful light.
If you want to display your own Luminarias on Christmas Eve in downtown Albuquerque during the festival, follow these simple steps:

What You’ll Need:
- Paper lunch bags (decorate them if you’d like)
- Votive candles – 1 per bag
- Sand
- Long utility lighter or fireplace match
What To Do:
- Create a lip with the paper bag by folding down about an inch
- Add plenty of sand to weigh down the bag
- Place the votive candle in the center of the sand
- Use a fireplace match or utility lighter to light it
